In the club's first ever official competition, Woodland FC fell just short of the Copa Modelo semi-final after a hard fought weekend in Kansas City, KS.
The Lions had to field a reduced roster due to injuries sustained in training (none serious). Nevertheless, the Lions fought hard in their first two games to take thrilling victories over Hossanna FC, and Bad Boys FC.
Lions Captain, Chandler Givler, scored the first ever competitive goal in the club's history in game 1 against Hossanna FC. Following in his stead, striker Andersson Obando scored a brace, along with standout defender Johnathan Young who punctuated the night with a marvelous left-footed curler. Midfielder Spencer Bone would conclude the scoring in a strong start.
Game 2 was quite physical, but the Lions would not be denied against Bad Boys FC. Strikers Chandler Givler, and Brennan Williams each would record a brace, Givler's 2nd goal being a laser beam that smashed in off the crossbar, while Andersson Obando recorded a 5th to give the Lions a 5-3 win.
The Lions fell in game 3 to Messi's FC 5-1, which left them out of the running for the semi-final by one point.
"It's unfortunate. It's also our first competition together as a club," owner Ross Harris said. "We've been together for a few weeks, and we put out a good effort. We will continue to grow more comfortable with each other as time progresses, and our players will continue to adapt themselves to our system that we are developing at our club. We won't waste this mistake, I promise you that. We now have been battle tested, and we can go into the Select League with a little adversity and experience under our belts. And that's a good thing."
The Lions kickoff their Select League season against Southside FC at 5:00PM on April 5th, 2024, at Charles J. Stump Memorial Park in Shawnee Kansas. This will be the league, and home opener for the club. We'd love to see you there!
