Woodland bounces back in derby against Lenexa City

The Royals got back to winning ways against cross-town rivals Lenexa City Football Club. A strong performance on all ends of the field culminated in a 4-0 win in favor of Woodland thanks to goals from Chandler Givler, Michael Okiring, Haddon DeMoure, and Brennan Williams.

The Royals spent most of the game as though the field was tilted towards the Lenexa City goal, peppering the Blues with shot after shot. The breakthrough came in the 16th minute when a pass was dinked over the defensive line by Brett Jackson, poorly cleared by Lenexa, and pounced on by Givler. Chandler looped a wonderful shot on a half-volley that dipped under the bar.

The Royals were bolstered by the return of Brennan Williams and Derrick Carson who both missed the loss to Real Overland Park. Dawud Radwan took a throw-in deep in the attacking third, Williams controlled it off his thigh, passing it to Michael Okiring. He controlled, and fired a powerful shot that screamed past the Lenexa City goalkeeper for the 2-0 lead.

45 seconds before halftime, substitute Haddon DeMoure would add a 3rd for the Royals after some skillful dribbling from Spence Jean-Baptiste. Spence beat 2 defenders, crossed low, and DeMoure had to simply tap it into an empty net for a 3-0 lead going into halftime.

Around the 60th', man of the match Brennan Williams would open his account for the season with a sizzling direct free kick that curled around the outstretched keeper, and into the side-netting for Woodland's 4th goal.

The Royals would continue to apply pressure throughout the match, creating several chances. Williams almost added a 2nd off a perfectly timed scissor-kick from a cross into the box from Andersson Obando. As derbies tend to go, the game began to grow chippy near the end as a Lenexa City player would accumulate two yellow cards, and get sent off with a few minutes to go in the match.

With the win, the Royals climbed to the top of the table on goal differential. Our next match will be Friday, May 10th, 5:00pm, vs Olathe United.
